Travertine Dream

Early morning light at Palette Spring, Mammoth Hot Springs, Yellowstone NP. I really enjoyed all of the abstract compositions available here with a long lens. In this image, a soft glow was created by the steam coming off the hot spring water (170 degrees F).

Travertine is a form of limestone deposited by hot springs and is formed by a process of rapid precipitation of calcium carbonate. Mammoth Hot Springs has the best collection of travertine terraces in Yellowstone.

Interesting image. A much different shot of the springs than you usually see. Thanks for sharing.

Shapes, colors and lighting all come together here. Maybe just a tad strong on the glow for my taste, but quite a beauty in any case.

This is without a doubt my favorite image of MHS. Totally intimate and creative scene. Shame this place has been so badly damaged over the past century or so...would have been amazing to see it 200 years ago...

Beautiful photography Scott.

A beautiful, crisp, abstract shot, Scott! The light is great, the exposure is perfect (keeping all the details in the bright white) and the textures are amazing. Well done!

I can't think of a better compliment to photographs of this nature than to say that it reminds me of Tony K's images of desert rock. The clean whites are exquisite in the midst of the glowing orange.

Scott, your image has great artitic impact on me. The composition with the diverse curves and diagonals, as well as lighting and colors really keep my attention. I also especially appreciate the tangible details of the texture.

Wonderful textures and colors, and I like the comp too. It appears a little on the soft side though to my old eyes.

Looks great! :toast:

My only complaint is the lack of ability to determine scale. It this a mountain or table salt?

Wonderful light, color and texture here, Scott! I really wish I had given this area more attention when I was there a few years back.

Scott - this is such a fascinating image. The textures and lighting come together so well here. I think this is by far the best abstract-type image I have seen from Mammoth Hot Springs and maybe Yellowstone overall. Really wonderful photo.
