New England Aster

New England Aster supported by Joe Pye weed. I made this image at Lake in the Hills Fen last week.

Now look at what you guys have done. You've got me shooting stacks! This is six image stack at f/5.6 aligned and blended with PS CS 4. I then changed a mask to show maximum blur on the background.

Nikon D700; Nikkor 24-85 @85; 1/200s @f/5.6, ISO 200, tripod

Comments and criticisms always welcome.

Beautiful blooms and buds. The background is a bit busy but not much to do about that I guess. It's them other "guys" to blame for stacks.

Excellent environmental portrait. My immediate reaction always is to go close and explore these tiny flowers. Your approach gives a nice counter to mine. Great job on the stacking !! :toast:

Good looking stack David. I also like the diagonal in the composition. Even with the stack I'm not sure that there's enough subject separation for my tastes. An alternative (I'm not sure how well it would work.) would be to create your stack with a longer telephoto (I'm guessing you have a 500mm for your avian images.). You might need to put an extenstion tube/s on it to get close enough to the subject. I'm thinking if you shoot that image at 5.6 you might not need the stack or only two or three images in it. The extra focal length should take the bg to a pretty good blur. It's a thought anyway. I've had decent luck using this approach.

David:
Stacking is an innovation which is difficult to resist and like you I have been coached into using it.

I think you have done a decent job here with the nice sharp aster. The bg is busy but not distracting and I like the environmental feel.
