Autumn Woods

As we all know, finding a cohesive composition in a woods setting can be difficult. This situation proved that point in two ways - one, it was full of woods debris and clutter and, two, footing was downright treacherous. What looks like solid footing was actually years worth of leaves sitting on top of football to basketball size rocks. I've never seen anything like it in my 60 years of trampling around in the woods. It literally took me 15-20 minutes of ankle twisting creeping to just get 15 yards into the woods from the road, then another few minutes to try to find a decent comp. I hope I've semi-succeeded.

Please viewe the larger version for better detail.

Yeah, I think the comp is very solid. The colors are terrific, and the crispness of detail excellent. I find the light to be very nice as well. offering unlimited viewing of every nook and cranny in this scene.

Lovely fall colors. The boulders and the trunks really anchor the scene. I think its an excellent composition,

I think this is stunning, Bill. So much going on but still very "cohesive" in its overall presentation. Light, colors, and detail all make the frame very attractive.

Interesting shot, Bill. Im not as totally sold as the others are, but im not sure why. Stream of consciousness wise, i really love the chaotic mix here, and how the mix of colors echoes that sentiment. The trouble im having stems from the depth--it looks like flat light to me (overcast??) which could certainly help with some fall colors scenes, but i think this one could use a little more sense of 3D. Im being extra tough on you though, cause really id be proud to have this in my portfolio! :wavey:

There's much going on in here and you composed this one very well. Nice details and light.

Ahh, welcome to my world! 90% of what I have to work with is this type of setting. You handled it well, I like the colors and comp. I probably would have moved some of the small sticks and limbs out of the bottom of the frame.

Bill, I like the way the rocks counteract the delicate foliage. The larger versions show great details and fantastic tangible textures. Great work for me.

Bill,

Right, directly up my alley! I think you've done a terrific job of pulling some order out of chaos and this was certainly worth the effort scampering through the woods to find and craft this. My only suggestion would be a slight burn down of the RH side of the big boulder up front; just to help keep the eye in the frame. Other than that Bill, just beautiful.

Yep, you got this one right. Both the rocks and the "goal post" trees anchor it nicely. I would probably be still there, with two broken legs from trying to find a way to see that flaming background clearly. Using it as a background really required a strong composition, and you found it.

Wonderful textures and colors here, and the comp has an openness that really invites you into the scene. Nice work.
