Sierra Cloudburst
by Harry Lichtman
My first trip to the Sierra backcountry was a great experience, complete with some exceptional lighting in the Dusy Basin area. A friend from CA recommended this area to me for its beauty and easy accessibility. My wife didn't join me for this trip, so I needed to make sure the gear hauling was manageable. I had scouted some locations earleir that afternoon which seemed to be protected from the wind. Two evenings in a row I was greeted with rain and hail, but somehow things cleared enough toward sunset. Everchanging mommatus clouds and light allowed images that could have been taken over several days due to the varying color of the light. The land in this image was illuminated by the mommatus clouds above, and gave a strong yellow cast to everything. I tried to reduce this post capture using WB adjustment, as I thought it might look a little too unusual to a viewer but was very real at the time.
I'd be interested to hear any comments on how you deal with such strong color cast - leave as seen or try to reduce. A similar condition occurred the next evening - this time with a red color cast at sunset.

21 commentsThe lighting is phenomenal. I don't know if trying to remove the color would be good. I think it makes the image in this case. It looks natural to me.
Your shot looks right to me...
Great job....
The light in this is exceptional and, for lack of a better term, 'true to life'. I've spent a lot of time in the Sierra in all seasons and can attest that this glow is right on. Don't change a thing!
I live for light like this--I hope I get some this coming week on the East Side!

Kent - good idea, I can see how that might improve the sky a bit.
Preston - Good luck with the light. Seemed most afternoons out there clouds developed and good opportunities - clear nights and mornings not so good
Look forward to seeing your travels.
Definitely not doing to touch that one.

Outstanding light and with that lit up sky I would expect a slight color cast, if anything this is understated. Sounds like you had a great adventure. Anticipating judging the red color cast image(s).

One real indicator of excessive color cast is a nuetrally colored component in the image, like the snow in the midground. It's white color anchors the image as reality. Just noticed the snow inthelarger image.
