My first post on the website. I finally made it to Joshua Tree National Park just to practice and try new techniques of landscape photography.

Shot with Canon 5D Mark II, 28mm, 1/400th sec @ F22, ISO 100. Post editing in Lightroom.

Beautiful sunstar. I like it's location behind the silhouette. Welcome to NPN

Christopher,

Welcome to NPN and the Landscape Gallery! The Joshua trees make for great silhouette subjects and you've captured that pretty nicely here and with a nice sunstar as well as Nancy points out. I think the nature of the extreme lighting situation (shooting in to the sun) has forced the cameras hand and made the landscape underexposed compensating for the bright sun and sky; but made for a nice silhouette. But because the landscape is quite dark, I might be tempted to crop about 1/2 the bottom since there isn't really anything down there adding to the composition. Getting closer to a square format might make for a stronger composition.

The only other nitpick I have really is simply the lens flare. Certainly tough to avoid, but it sure looks like you've picked up all the possible flares the lens could produce. tough to deal with them all. I might consider cloning the main one towards the bottom along with the crop - I think you'll have a stronger image.

Glad to have you post and we look forward to more images and for your participation! Welcome aboard.

Very moody and beautiful. The bright sunstar goes well the silhouette of the tree.

I look forward to seeing more of your work here.

Thanks for the thoughts and comments. This was my first attempt at a lens flare. It was really a spur of the moment shot as I was resting in the shadow of the tree on a very hot September day. I really needed a ND filter but did not have one at the time. Good points about the flares but actually, I liked them a little. Could try cropping it but I also liked the shadow as it extended toward me from the base of the tree. I will play around with it some. Thanks again.
