Candle Light

I thought for sure that Stan would have mentioned overused titles in his Top Peeves article. I am running out of clever, catchy titles for images - Storm Light just seemed overdone. I am sure this type of image would fall into one of Stan's categories, but being there it was just gorgeous. The tips of the peaks reminded me of lit candles on a cake. Hail and rain 2 hours earlier, but clearing toward sunset in the Sierra's Dusy Basin with the Palisades in the distance, Isosceles Peak to the right.

17-40L, single exposure, f16, 5D II ISO 100

Beautiful. I'm jealous of the light you got here. Really nice foreground with the submerged rocks. Which route did you take to get to this lake? I day hiked along the South side of the first lake (i.e. the furthest west, very close to the main trail) to get here, but it looked like going along the North side may have been easier.

William - I saw from you web site that we were in nearly the same place! I hiked cross country to this lake from the south shore area. Was actually very easy, as compared to bushwacking out east. I had great light 2 evenings in a row, Am's were boring blue and clear. Idon't think the north side would be any easier, looked like a lot of talus near the lake's edge. The thing I found out there is that once you actually get to a spot that you can see 1/4 mile away, lots of routes become available that weren't obvious at a distance or angle. Same thing with compositions around these lakes. Small changes and the profiles of the peaks change, so you have to keeping moving until you find a mix that you like. Fortunately, there are some many lakes, tarns, rocks, that the possibilities are endless. Finding reflections was easy, matching a nice mix of rocks poing out of the water and under the water was what I was after, in addition to the great light. Several other images earlier in the evening that I'll get to soon.

This is very nice. I like the warm light on just the top of the peaks being complimented by the color of the clouds. I also notice that the refection of the clouds gives color to the underwater rocks.

I actually prefer this one much more than your previous post. It's amazing you were able to capture all the detail with just one exposure. I love the reflected color of the peaks in the tarn. Bringing to life a scene like this beckons me to return to the High Sierra as soon as possible. Congrats Harry!

This is fine, Harry. Dusy Basin has it's own weather regardless of what is happening nearby or in the valley. I've shot from the same location, if you want to peek at my site.

About as fine a High Sierra scene as one could wish for. You must have been pretty excited to capture such superb light during your trip. This is a top-notch wallhanger, plain and simple.

What fantastic light, and stunning clarity in the detail and texture of these peaks...wonderfully composed with the f/g rocks leading into the highlights of reflected peaks.

Harry, Looks like you got some spectacular conditions for the colorful sunset photograph. Isn't the late afternoon light so nice up there in the Dusy Basin? I spent the night with out a tent and sleeping bag up on top of Agassiz on the far left, you must be camped at the lower lake at about 11,300. I do like the way Isosceles protrudes into the scene here on the right, that's almost 1,000 ft of rock face there. Thanks for bringing back the memories.

Hi Harry

This is a super nice composition with great lighting. I would be tempted to deepen the shadows to create more depth and drama. Beautiful work though.

Thanks for all of the positive feedback. The lighting was something special, and to be surrounded by some great peaks as well.

Steve - I was looking for the climbing route of Agassiz as I've seen some shots from the summit, maybe yours and Floris? It doesn't look easy from any angle, and to find a flat spot to sleep impossible! I often think the view looking up is more impressive than the view from summits, but I think these peaks might be an exception.

Thanks for the reply Harry. Guess the South side is the way to go. Again, it's a fantastic shot with that last light and Isosceles right there.

Yes, I climbed it one morning and couldn't see the route up very well so I got stuck about half way up before sunrise, then went back a few days later and climb up half of it as the sun was setting so I could see the best route up, the gulley from Bishop Pass. It's an easy class 2 and 3 the whole way up the boulders and tiny goat looking trails. I was inspired to get up there by David Muench, his son Marc guided him up there when he was getting too old to do that stuff. Floris went up the year after I did, neither one of got clouds up there and I never got clouds in Dusy either so you're one lucky guy Harry.

The say that whole ridge is just part of "the Palisade Traverse" is some of the hardest climbing in the Sierra. Lot's of loose rock and way beyond my skills. Good shooting and glad you got the good light coming from so far away Harry!

Man, this is gorgeous! This is the place I want to be able to get to one day.How did you go, from the trailhead at South lake through Bishop pass? How long did it take you to get into the basin? I'm probably not in proper shape to try it, but I'm determined, and by next summer, I could be more fit.
