One of my backcountry camp sites in the Ansel Adams Wilderness during my recent trip to the Sierras. The nearby tarn provided a great spot for reflections of the nearby peaks and total solitude. I added myself a nd some journal writing to add a human element to the image. I would love to get some of these into Backpacker someday.

5D II, 17-40, single exposure in the late afternoon.

Harry, for me, the smooth glass of the water really makes the scene. Clever thinking to add yourself.

Nice job,

Hi Harry, Very nice, and I like that you are in the scene writing in your journal. It gives this a very peaceful feel. Well done!

Harry,
I get a great feeling from this, but it makes me think "I hope he had a good pad under that sleeping bag."

Well-conceived, well-composed, and well-executed. The only nit I can think of is that the single cloud looks kind of lonesome, but that's a reminder that we are not in control when we visit the wilderness.

Wayne - funny you should mention the sleep pad - I was using an ultralight NeoAir for the 1st time and unfortunately during my entire trip it would slowly loose air during the night, making it both uncomfortable and chilly as more of me was in contact with the ground. I needed to roll off the pad 3-4 X in the night and reinflate it. Cascade Design has sent be a new one, looking forward to trying it out soon!

Nice image Harry...certainly worth trying to get BP magazine to take it.

As for the mattress, have you tried thermarest? Most awesome inflatable mattresses I've ever used. Never had any issues with ours yet...fingers crossed.

Curious, in Cali, do they have distance requirements from water sources? Here in Wyoming it's usually 100 feet (normally...some places are 1/4 mile) from any body of water...just wondering.

NIck - It is 100 ft. in wilderness areas. This spot was probably 75 ft. from the tarn, but was the only previously use tents site I could find. Rather than making a new one, which would have been nearly impossible given the talus, I decided to use the site that was already there and minimize the overall impact. SInce this spot was not near any trails, I'm not sure if this was a season pond left over from last years big winter? I think it may be difficult to jusge true distance from the photo due to the lens distortion and the downward sloping topography.

I forgot to mention, thermarest and the Neoair are both made by Cascade Design. I have used the traditional Thermarest for years, but wanted to try something much lighter and improved R-rating, I guess due to more air in the matress that keep you higher off cold ground. The downside is its very thin material.
