Presque Isle River + crop

This is a picture I made on my recent trip to Upper MI. The Presque Isle River empties in to Lake Superior about 100 yards or so from this spot in the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness Area. I always enjoy watching and listening to the river from this location which is from a suspension bridge. You have to shoot this when no one else is on the bridge because it really moves alot when someone steps on to it. I did shoot a vert from this spot a couple of years ago but now think I like this one better. Thanks for any thoughts.

The larger shot really shows off all the great shapes and water gullies in the river Nick, I think your exposure is spot on too. I like the autumnal feel aswell.

Gary.

Those carved out shapes are very interesting.
I think I might like a bit of a tighter crop.

Wow, this place looks super cool. I'd have to find a way to get down there and shoot it up close

Nick- Nice flow through the pothole. We have some of these type of formations in NH, and the high perspective seems to show them off better, as you have done here. They seem to blend together when shoot closer to them. Shutter speed looks perfect to me. I might be tempted to crop a little tight all around, but especially at the top.

Nice scene Nick. Lots of interesting potholes and cascades to keep the eye moving throughout the image. The bubbles at the top are slightly distracting, have you thought about a pano crop to include only a small portion of them?

The shapes of the potholes and the swirl in the water are terrific. The touch of fall is a nice addition. Very nice as presented, but I could also see a slight crop from the top to emphasize the main elements.

Really pretty Nick. I love the shapes and contortions of the bedrock and the way the stream travels in different directions through those shapes.

Thanks guys! Appreciate your thoughts and suggestions on this so far. I like it as is but now can see a little tighter crop working well, especially from the top as many of you seem to feel. I will repost a tighter version and see how it looks.
Taylor, You can get down along the edge here for some closer shots if you are careful, which I have done. Just out of sight here on the right there was another photographer working pretty hard. Some interesting shots from there too. Thanks much, Nick

Here is the crop version. I took more off the top and a little off each side.

Nick, this is a very convincing capture of the river to me. It is a pleasure for me to look at the sharp edged rocks together with the flow. The brown and green tones make for a very specific atmosphere to my eye. The tighter crop works even better in my opinion, as it keeps my attention on the elements in the center, which I perceive as main area of interest.

Super-sharp image Nick, great colors and excellent water flow! Having been on a big swinging bridge to shoot for a regional magazine, i'm not even sure how you kept it still at .5 seconds with NO ONE on it!! lol, great job.

Cropped version really pops. Those are incredible formations. Are they glacial in origin?

Very intriguing and well done, Nick. The formations are quite interesting, the shutter speed works well, and I like the encroaching vegetation on each side. I agree with taking a bit off the top and the pano format is effective, though I'd suggest cloning out the lone green branch that intrudes at the top of the pano (a bit left of center).

Thanks all! Nancy, This river is quite powerful at this point and the force creates miniature whirlpools along the banks. That water action has carved out these circles in the stone over I don't know how many years, lots and lots I guess.
Phil, Yes, I thought about that after doing the crop and should have cloned it out I guess. Thanks! Nick

I like the torturous flow and multiple pot hole Nick. I also like your shutter speed and natural framing with the branches.

I like the flow at the top dropping into the repeating shapes in the bedrock. I might consider cropping the side a little to remove some of the busy looking limbs but it's really nice as presented.

The rock formation is extraordinary. Real nice treatment of the water and the turned trees to the side adds that autumnal feel. Nice work Nick.

Nick, the shapes of the rocks are fantastic. I also like your choice of the shutter speed. The cropped version is much better IMHO.

I like both versions. The first one adds a bit more context which is nice. The pothole water falls are very interesting and certainly hole my attention. The touch of fall color is nice too. Does it get better than this?

Nick: One of my favorite places to shoot from even though the bridge is really, really bouncy. I really like the light and contrast in the image. Too bad the maples had already dropped their leaves. But anyway, this is an amazing scene and well captured.

Looks like you had another productive trip again, Nick. I really like the rock curves from erosion in the foreground. They make a very nice contrast against the flowing waters. The repost is better and showcases the features better. Good job getting this sharp. :toast:

Really neat subject Nick. I like the context of the original but w/out the distracting white spots in the water (reflection/leaves?). If it were possible to take these spots out with your polarizer I'd think that would be a better shot. Otherwise, I'd take the cropped version with those distracting spots removed. Love the shutter speed as well.

Very nice, Nick. Your perspective really works to show off the eroded contours in the stream. I also like the contrasting color in the foliage.

Thanks so much for all of your thoughts on this one so far. Very much appreciated! It is such an interesting place that I really made it a point to shoot again on the fall trip.
Stan, If you make the trip to Upper MI let me know when you get to WI. I will meet up with you! I think this would be a long hike with snow shoes if you were there in Jan. The roads are not plowed in much of this area and it could be quite hard getting here I think. I have been in this area in January, but not back to this spot. It would be interesting to see it then.
Todd, Yes, we probably did cross paths. Hope your trip was good. Nick

Nicely done. Didn't make it to the Presque Isle River this year. The lower water levels allowed you to highlight the rock.

Thank you Morris. I was quite pleased with the ss too. It was the look I was hoping for. I was also glad the water was low so that the carved out sections showed more than any other time I have photographed it. Thanks, Nick
