I decided to stay close to home last weekend and found a few of these in the woods behind our home. They were extremely active- I guess busy refueling for the trip further south. Anyway, this one came down to some lower pine branches and I managed a handful of shots with only a couple of non blurry ones.

50D, 500mm, ISO 200, 1/100, F4 Please see LARGE version and thanks for your comments!

Wonderful detail and pose you've captured Sharon, I also really like the inclusion of one needles as they help to explain the setting visually of the subject's natural habitat.

Yellow-rumps winter in NJ and points south of there so you might have this bird around until spring. The eastern form you've got here used to be called Myrtle Warbler before being merged with the Audubon's Warbler of the West and that old name is a clue to what they eat in the cold months.

Liked all warblers they are active and you've done well to find a moment when it was still enough for a shot. A small burst of fill flash would have helped balance the shaded warbler with the sunlit background.

I love this setting, especially with the pine needles. Wonderfully soft background, and the larger version shows the great detail in the bird and perch.

Nice pose and sharpness Sharon. I agree that some fill flash would have helped here. :toast:
