Oregon Grape Leaf

This is our official state shrub (I think). Oregon-grape (Mahonia aquifolium, Berberidaceae) is an evergreen shrub related to the barberry. This leaf was so brilliant that I did not touch contrast brightening, saturation or anything but sharpening and I cut down on the highlite glare somewhat. What do you think is the glare still too bright?

E-5, 50mm macro
1/1000 sec @ f10, - 0.7 EV
hand held
spot metering
ISO 1000
manual focus
approx. 80% of FF

Large view

Thanks for C&C.

I really like the colors in this, Charlie. The colors of fall can be so brillant all on their own without help from us. I think the glare is minimal enough but I am distracted by parts of the leaf being out of focus.

You absolutely right about the focus. I'll be looking for another of this type and try to get my SS and aperture better suited.

Nice color & light. Only the leaf bottom-right is disturbing me

I like the colors and light on the subject, but I agree that either the entire leaf should be sharp and that it would be better w/o the partial green leaf in the LRC.

No problem for me with any glare, Charlie. Like the subject matter, love the colours and the simple composition. Only the softness of the leaf tip seems a slight shame - otherwise a fine image.

I like the imperfect nature of your subject, especially the 'bite' out of its edge and the tiny round hole. I am distracted by the green leaf llc, and agree that a greater dof would benefit this image.

There isn't too much glare for me, and I'll echo the other comments about the leaf tip. Otherwise the sharpness is really good.

Charlie: This is a very worthy subject IMO and certainly worth revisiting. A few suggestions come to mind. First I would probably use a polarizer to tame some of the glare and saturate the colors a bit more. I would also arrange the leaf in a more diagonal orientation in the frame and lastly I would try to keep the green leaf in the corner out of the shot.>=))>

Thanks Bill. I'm watching for another leaf on the Oregon grape plants to try this again. Your tips will help make the next one better. Perfect I'm not promising.

An interesting subject, and I like all of Bill's suggestions. (Who doesn't? ) I hope to see another effort on this one from you, Charlie!
