red leaf

This leaf landed on top of pine needles and older decaying leaves. I like the color contrasts this made with the bright red against the neutral colors. No arranging done.

Canon Rebel T1i. 163mm at F/13 for 1/10 sec. ISO 200. Handheld. Natural lighting.

Great clarity and color in this one, Carolyn. The use of the diagonal lines works so well, too.

Simple but effective, Carolyn. The pine needles and faded leaves provides a nice backdrop to the red leaf, and the red leaf has a beautiful tone. Really a nice fall image. (I am struggling to comprehend your techs, however. You really handheld this at 1/10 sec. at 163mm?)

Scott, I also was confused when I looked at the data for this photo. I didn't realize my focal length was that long or the shutter speed that slow. I was using a 55-250mm lens. I most often shoot in aperture mode so I probably picked F/13, zeroed in on my image and shot. The lens was image stablized and I shoot in burst mode when handholding so at least one shot out of several is usually sharper of a given image. Processing can also help with contrast and sharpening.

Thanks for the explanation, Carolyn. Again, there is certainly good detail in the main leaf so I was surprised by the techs. I don't shoot with any IS lenses myself, so that helps explain my lack of understanding of the techs.

Carolyn:
Bright red again the earthy bg colors. Beautiful color and texture on the leaf and yes good steady hands to pull this off.

Lovely portrait of the fallen leaf. The few bits of green really help the red and rust colors stand out.
