Purple in Black & White

Canon PowerShot S5 IS

I was looking through images this evening and saw how detailed this one was, but when I converted it to black and white the detail showed up even more. It seems like the purple color overwhelmed the detail.

Comments and suggestions as to how I handled or could better handle the BW conversion are desired and will be appreciated.

Thank you!

The resulting image has great impact Barbara. There are so many ways to convert to black & white all depending on what camera and post processing programs you have. From conversion in-camera, PS, infrared, solorization in NIK to B&W conversion in Topaz, etc. just to name a few. All results are different but most still pleasing. The beauty is in the eye of the beholder and an artists view of the subject.

Barbara, I like your design very much. Your idea of converting to black and white is a good one. What technique did you use to make the conversion?
The flower looks overly sharpened to my eyes as I viewed the larger photo.
What were your shooting details? It would be helpful to know those also.

Richard's comment is right on. There's a very artful feeling to this image. Reminds me a bit of Escher's works.

Regards,

Carol

IMO this is a very successful conversion. First I was thinking it is a flower covered by ice. I like the square format. Suit very well to the subject. Nicely done Barbara.

Fun to study. The BW really brings a different feeling to this.

Barbara:
This is just the right kind of image for B&W; graphical with strong lines. I would play around with this a bit more to get a little more contrast and tone. As mentioned, there are many different software available but if you just have CS5, you could use shadow/highlight and Lab B&W
