Golden Morning

In August I scouted out the area around “Chilchzimmersattel”. I really fell in love with this landscape. It’s located in the northwestern part of Switzerland in the canton of Solothurn and Basel. Especially in the fall and winter it’s very exciting to photograph this area since there’s fog in the valley below and above 900 meters there’s sunny weather. So early one morning in late September I climbed“Belchenflue” the second highest peak in this area. Actually it was rather hiking than climbing. Theree’s a small trail leading all the way to the top. Unfortunatley the sunrise wasn’t so promising but about a couple of minutes later fog made some interesting light situation. I’m not quite happy about the composition since there’s not enough room at the top between the mountain peak and the frame…but this light situation lasted not long enough to compose another one.

Techs: Nikon D700, 70-200 lens (@135mm), ISO 200, 1/250 sec, f11
Thanks for any comments and thoughts

Wonderful light and mood. I would agree that a little room at the top would be a bonus on this one. Should you be so inclined, you might be able to clone in a little room without too much difficulty. That solution may or may not appeal. I like the image.

I like the warm golden light Bill. I agree with your comment about room on the top but the light is indeed gorgeous.

Wonderful mood with the extensive fog and think you know well the slight shortcoming of the top space.

That's some magic light and tones....agree re the room at the top, but it's a fine shot regardless.

Great conditions and I bet it was stunning to be up there witnessing this. Maybe you could crop the top part.

Bill, congrats on capturing this unique moment! This is an exceptional beauty to my eye.

I think a crop of the top with both summits at the right (including the "v" between them) might help me to concentrate on the lower part, which would also make for a stunning composition in my opinion. Thanks for sharing!

That is some amazing light and color with the fog, Bill. Wonderful conditions you caught in the short time you had. I see what you mean about the top, but still a beautiful shot. The layers are fantastic! I also think Peter's crop suggestion might work quite well since the peaks are that close to the edge. :toast:

You just don't witness that everyday. Gorgeous light and I can feel the warmth from here.
Great job

The golden light is stunning and your use of receding layers works very well. Agree that a bit more room at the top would be nice but a gorgeous image either way.

Like everyone has mentioned, more room at the top would have been good Bill, but this is fantastic otherwise! That golden light is magical!

The light is really tremendous, Bill, and certainly holds a lot of interest. I'm having a bit of a difficult time getting the scale of things here, but it all looks pretty big.

That's indeed some great light Bill. I'm with you about wanting more room up top. A scroll crop down to the "v" of those peaks seems to enhance this quite a bit. :toast:

I agree about the tightness at the top - not ideal. But the scene as such is fantastic, the light diffusing through the fog makes everything glow magically.

Amazing light and fog, Bill! More room at the top would really be nice but it still works very well.
