Sleepy head-Barred Owl

I was so fortunate the other morning to notice this barred owl napping on this snag. I so rarely see this species out in the open in good light that I almost fell over when I noticed it. One of the great things about shooting a 500mm with 1.4x TC and 1.3x crop body is that I did not have to get at all close to this bird to get the shots I wanted. So, as you can see, I did not even wake it up. It always pleases me when I can get a shot and know I did not interfere with the animal's behavior.

Some will not like the fact you cannot see an eye clearly, for me that is what makes this image. A glimps into this bird's world without me being a factor.

Canon 1DM4
500mm f/4 + 1.4x TC
ISO 800
1/2500s
f/7.1
Manual Exp.
Hand held
69% of vertically shot frame

Congratulations on this wonderful photo Ron. I agree with your comment on finding, capturing and leaving the subject to just go about its day undisturbed. I just love how well this image has EVERYTHING from the main subject, attitude, detail, perch, foreground foliage and OOF complimentary background..... all working together. Your to be congratulated and if I were you I would get this printed, matted, framed and hung as soon as possible so you can stand back and really appreciate it.

Stunning image Ron-really cool to find him in the open, and to find him on a perch with Holiday Season vegetation-perfect! :toast:

No way did you find this!! And I can't believe he was snoozing so soundly in such an exposed place. Excellent find!
Love the snag and berries. I might try to selectively lighten up the dark side of his face a bit.
Incredible..

Beautiful, Ron. I love the composition. The lines on the front of the bird really work well with the perch and the side lighting adds drama to the image.

Besides the detail and sharpness and beautiful light, what really strikes me about this image are the beautiful lines, the straighter lines of the vegetation and the perch contrasted with the beautiful, beautiful curved lines of the owl.

wonderful comp and setting, Ron, this is beautiful. I like the hint of an open eye and don't need any more--I agree that it's good to not be noticed.

Always nice to find any owl in the daytime with good light and get a decent image. Excellent composition showing some of the habitat and the larger image looks great, nice job in spotting this and getting a wonderful shot, well done.

A wonderful image in every way. Excellent IQ, setting and light. And the droopy wing pose goes so well with the "sleepy" theme. Excellent.
