I hope everyone is having a wonderful holiday season. It's been a while since I've posted anything new here...life has been busy. I've really enjoyed all of the quality images which have passed through the gallery over the past few weeks. Keep up the good work everyone!

Borax Hot Springs, Alvord Desert, Oregon, November 2010.

I've been working on my b/w processing recently and this image is my latest project. This is my image titled Alvord Desert Sunrise reprocessed in b/w. I'm amazed by how much I was able to bring out the fog/mist in the b/w version. I hope that when you view the image you feel like the image could have been created on another planet.

Nikon D7000, Nikkor 12-24 dx, polarizer
5 sec at f/16, ISO 100
Converted to b/w in Lightroom 3. Levels, curves, midtone and luminosity adjustments done in CS5.

All C&C are always appreciated. Thanks for taking a look. Larger version is provided.

While the color version is gorgeous, this version has a more ethereal quality which I prefer Scott.

Scott,

Wonderful! I agree with Eva too. This b&w conversion really holds on to the misty mood and atmosphere. (Also hides the fence posts better!) Which are insignificant at this point. Almost has an IR look and feel to it. But no matter, the atmosphere is wonderful and I really like this. No nits here.

Beautiful! The color version is wonderful but I really love this in b/w. What a fantastic feel and mood this has. Excellent work Scott.

Love the way the foggy background glow brings out the sharpness of the icy foreground grasses.

Well, I like this, but the color version is stunning. It's the one I'd hang on my wall in a second.

Both are wonderful but I prefer the colored version. the b&w is a little too high key for my tastes.

Just beautiful Scott, a very pleasing composition. I really like the b&w conversion. It reminds me of the Tule Lake National wild life area. Great work!

I like the color version as well, but this one is my first choice. The frosty grasses almost give this an infrared feel, but still very real. Good comp too!

The b/w version creates a wonderful graphic, dreamy image. Fantastic work.

Scott,

The color version is nice but this is spectacular! The composition leads me in and the mist in the BG is mesmerizing. Really well done.

The color version is great Scott, but your B&W conversion is even better! This definitely looks otherworldly! I love the soft but sharp look you were able to achieve here. Wonderful! :toast:

This certainly works well in black and white. I love the softness of the background. I might even lessen the contrast on the foreground grasses. Very nice.

The color version seems to have more detail, while the b&w version, without the color to create contrast, seems foggier with less detail (particularly towards the bg area) but with more glowing luminosity. So, there are aspects of both I really like. The b&w conversion looks fabulous here, as does your overall processing. I like the almost infra-red appearance of the image too.
Happy New Year!

I loved the color version, of course, but this is very nice too. Good job on the conversion.
