Happy new year everyone! It was a fantastic year at NPN for me with a lot of inspiring photos that made me work a little bit harder on my own photography and I'm pretty sure you'll raise the bar for 2012!

This was taken on the last day of 2011 and we were lucky enough to catch this parhelic circle or sun halo. A simple composition, but I hope it works. I have a few doubts about the young spruce trees not being separated enough from the juniper, but maybe it's only in my mind. It was my first new year's eve spent in the mountains and it was totally awesome.

The simplicity of the composition is absolutely wonderful, in my opinion. I love it. The minimalistic composition is complemented by the almost monochromatic color scheme, and the uniqueness of the scene. Very eye-catching, and beautifully done.

I agree with the other comments so far . . . this is excellent work! In my experience a sun halo is a rare sight and you captured it quite well. I like the spruce trees in the middle and don't see any "separation" issues. One quite minor issue is that my eye is drawn a bit to the cut-off spruce in the lower LHC of the frame . . . you have at least a couple options for addressing that if desired.

No nits from me Dorin, beautiful work. The slight blue tone gives a nice sense of the frigid conditions, and that parhelic halo is icing on a beautiful frosty cake!

Neat--you framed the trees perfectly, not easy to do since you cant control the halo! :toast:

Dorin,

Glorious! I'd even go so far as to say magical. Needless to say, this works beautiful.

A very minor suggestion if you are considering printing. If it were mine, I might be tempted to crop/clone the very left edge to eliminate the partially cut off pine. Very minor indeed, but when you get a wonderful moment like this I tend to get even more picky... ;-)

Thank you so much guys. Yes, I'm aware about the cut off spruce. It will go down. For some unknown reason, I didn't feel like cropping or cloning at the time of processing.

An excellent capture, Dorin. I've only seen one of this type of phenomenon, and it sure is something to witness. Fabulous framing here and excellent processing. I agree about removing the far left tree on the frame edge.

Fantastic, Dorin. Love the monochromatic color and how you achieved such remarkable shadow detail in the snow covered trees. Amazing image.

Wow, cool shoot Dorin, this works extremely well! Without reading anyones comments I would suggest cropping a small amount from the left to remove that tree at the edge of the frame. You may even want to take the same amount off the right hand side to keep the halo centered. Congrats on this image and Happy New Year! :toast: :toast:
