The Bend

So I went to the States for the first time in december, specifically Utah. Aside from the fun of experiencing the USA, the landscape was simply great! This is Horseshoe Bend of course, an icon and nothing original from my side, but I loved the light and it's probably my favourite image I've processed up to now (which isn't much, I've got loads more shots to do).

We saw some great light and clouds coming and where very content to wait for it all to come together. Sometimes the wait and view are almost as good as taking the image itself and seeing it on a big screen or even better, on a large print ;-)

It's a two image blend, and I chose to cut the bottom of the bend for 3 reasons, namely: The nature of the bend is that the eye completes the curve of the bend without it needing to be in the frame as a whole, there is a very prominent foreground rock when including the whole bend and lastly I wanted more sky and had only 17mm

Thanks for looking, c&c welcome! Please view large!

This is a very nice take on Horsheshoe Bend. You have some good light in the sky and the scene looks very realistic. I'm not missing the bottom of the bend much at all. Very good capture!

I like the dark presentation here Jorne, and the cut off bottom doesn't bother me. I also like the cloud movement you captured. Just enough without being too blurry. Glad you had a great trip to the good ole' USA Jorne!

One of my favorite places to take in the views. Personally, I do wish the bottom was there, but I can understand your reasons. The detail in the large version is great. For your first visit you captured it very well. Hope you plan on coming back.

Jorne,

Thanks for your explanations about the bottom - can't say I'd do anything different with everything you had to consider. The somewhat dark presentation also reduced the need for the bottom. And you have a terrific sky. So all in all, you did very well on the popular landmark. Nice job.

I'm really enjoying this! The darker view of this is quite nice because it is still full of color and wonderful detail. This sky works so well with the overall feel. Your comp also works wonderfully for me. Beautiful image and Fantastic feel! Yes, view it large.

A beautiful shot, Jorne. I quite like the darker presentation here, plus the details are nicely revealed in the larger version. Love the sky colors of blue/yellow set above the reds of the rock.

I like the inky colors (the combination of cyan and magenta overtones) which work well here Jorne. The yellow horizon adds to the drama. Definitely a different view of this place.

Icon or not, it's a beautiful picture! Very dramatic sky and light.

Nice take on this icon, Jorne. I did notice some strange artifacts in the sky on the far right hand side. Some of the clouds don't seem to 'match up', almost looks like a stitch line or some cloning was performed.

You got some nice light and created a very nice presentation. My first inclination was to suggest warming the rock a bit, but in the context of the sky, it all looks quite natural.
