American Coot

Again from the afternoon I spent at Gilbert Water Ranch with Rich and Jim, this is, I believe, the same coot that Jim H. posted catching a fish. A little later, it came in close for portraits. I thought this one captured the sort of silly nature of the coot pretty well.

I appreciate your critiques and comments. Please view the larger version if possible.

Crop to 50% of original (9.0 of 18MP), from horizontal to vertical

f/7.1, 1/1600, ISO 400

Canon 7D, 500mm + 1.4x, lying down with camera resting on pack.

Brian, nice job handling the exposure. I don't think I've ever seen a coot portrait before & the pose you caught it in definately shows off their 'quirky' side. Nice colors in the background as well.

Nicely done. Good DOF, sharpness and exposure and I like the intimacy of the image.

Wonderful portrait, the wet feather detail is outstanding. Love the composition, it looks as if he just stepped into the frame.

Exposure is fantastic, the details with droplets of water on its feathers is amazing.

Like the photo. Your coot shots have opened my eyes. Coots seem so common I never shoot them, but these images are stunning. I like the "headshot". It could go on his CV.

This was a very interesting encounter as I never had a coot come out of water and approach you head on like this one did. Very nice close up with good detail and I like seeing the contrast between the black, red eye and white beak up close like this, well done Brian.

This coot is a real hoot alright, Brian. Funny expression. Great surface texture on the body.
