Ferruginous Hawk
by Ron Dudley
A large crop and there's still a lot of dead space around the bird but this is about as close as I've been able to get to this species and I liked the pose.
I spent quite a while trying to get close to this hawk and it seemed relaxed during my approach. But I'm beginning to think that a wing stretch like this from a bird who has been resting for a while is often a sign of imminent take-off if I continue to approach.
7D, 1/1250, f/7.1, ISO 500, 500 f/4, 1.4 tc, shot from pickup window on 11/8/11, exposure adjustment in ACR, cropped to 46% of original image, sharpened bird and perch, no additional processing or adjustments, natural light, not baited, set up or called in

I think the centered comp is well suited for this subjects pose, & the vertical perch..
Very nice!
