Klamath Glory
by Lon Overacker
Yet another blast from the past. My good friend Kyle Krause and I made many trips to the Tule Lake/Klamath NWR areas along the CA/OR border back in the 90's. Yeah, the 90's, before the internet ya know.
I've actually been surprised that there haven't been many images posted from this area rich in wildlife and in the landscape. I want to return to this area again. The hoar frost in the winters and a backdrop of Mt. Shasta to the west can be quite beautiful.
This is the Lower Klamath lake, National Wildlife Refuge, sunrise probably about 10deg.
And yes, I've captured a sunrise or two. It sure seems like a long time since I have though. This is from my early days of 4x5. Don't even remember which camera this was, but certainly Velvia 50.
Reworking some of those images and not convinced on color/saturation here. Your thoughts and honest critiques always welcome.
Thanks!
Lon

33 commentsThe color and saturation look spot-on to me, but I have yet to calibrate my new monitor so that feedback is almost worthless

This extremely nice, Lon. Glad you brought this out from your archives and did some up to date final processing on it. All looks wonderful IMO. Another shot with some super warm light too. Although, the hoar frost and frozen terrain sure looks plenty cool out there too....

Another "Like" to add to the list,
I love the contrast between the sky and frost on the shore.
Very well captured and processed.
Nice to see a very beautiful area that's seems to have been by-passed by others be given it's due. Lovely sunrise. I'm sure the men and women who manage the area would appreciate your work. Their work is often unheralded.
Works for me!

A couple folks mentioned the "beach." No beach, just frozen and frosted water.
Paul and Russ, "Very cool old school Lon." Are you guys insinuating I'm old?
Peter Coskun. The best time is winter, late January and early Feb. We started going there for the waterfowl and wintering Bald Eagles, but eventually kept returning for the landscape. Great area for birders. Lava Beds is right there, wildlife and Rural America. Great place.
Peter Cross: "I'm sure the men and women who manage the area would appreciate your work." Funny you should mention that. The rangers up there actually knew of my images from the region and actually referred someone to me which led to a book cover sale a number of years ago.
Thanks everyone!
Lon
I almost posted my vertical image from are trip, maybe next time. Excellent work my friend.
