Turquoise Sunset

Traigh Mhor, Isle of Harris, Scotland

The light was just truly amazing this particular evening on Traigh Mhor. It was quite intense at this point but at this angle the strong nuclear sidelight highlighted the gorgeous turquoise ocean and storm clouds overhead. Taken on a Transient Light Workshop with Ian C.

Canon 5DM2
Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L at 28mm
ISO50 2.5sec f/22
Polarizer + Graduated ND

Thanks for having a look.

Beautiful - this should also be an entry in this week's WC - theme "Serenity".
Love the color pallette and incredible light.
There is a little red blip just at the surf line, just left of center, that could be cloned out.

Beautiful light, and a beautiful scene. I wish there was a little sand showing, only because I love the speckled nature of it. Very nicely done.

I'm sorry, i have to dissent here. I think the pretty colors are awesome, but the highlite grabs my eye, yanks it into a tiny space on the rhs and leaves it there. All the drama is in a thin strip on the right. I keep thinking 'please, please let me see what is over there' If i crop the top half, i actually then really love this image, it becomes totally balanced and a fantastic semi-abstract view of the surf and shore with a nice diaganol across it. I dare you to try it--i double dog dare you!

Eva, the stunning colors and straight composition really work for me. The bright area at the right draws my attention, but then I follow the coastline again back into the image. An interesting kind of dynamics in the receeding waves, too.

I like the drama in the sky and the lines on the beach. The overexposed sky does bother me a little bit. Sometimes you still need to bracket the exposures, even you have a GND.

I do not accept Stan's double dog dare  Sorry Stan...... (I actually have more surf abstracts and will get to them at some point) but decided to crop off a little bit of the right but it does loose some of the gorgeous highlights on the water that I really love..... but I love the sky better.... and also like the silhouette of the Isle of Taransay. This was a very dynamic evening of light and surf action.

Thanks Neale. I have done exposure blends, HDR, and tried focus blends but that is really not my thing. I don't even like to crop. I prefer the use of ND filters and have started to get back into film again which I did for about 30 years before going digital in 2005. To each his own. I actually purchased my own Pentax 67ii with 50-100 and 90-180 lenses as well as an adapter to use those lenses on my 5DM2 (which are supposed to produce superb results better than any Canon L glass. What fun overall exploring new and old options.

Lovely, Eva. I like all the elements here and how well they work together. Could maybe see burning down the light clouds along the top border.

Beautifully composed image Eva! And the light is incredible. I like the diagonal flow through the image and the dichotomy between the grey clouds at the top and all the gorgeous color below.

Both versions are nice, Eva. I do like the highlights on the water in the original post. It's to bad about the blown highlights in the clouds, though they are only mildy distracting. :toast:

This is my favourite of the Traigh Mhor shots you have presented Eva. Just gorgeous. Wonderfully balanced lighting between sky and shore and unlike Stan I really believe the bright light at the right side is needed to emphasise the direction and power of the light splitting the sky. The bright right hand side reinforces the desire to shield your eyes from the blinding light and gaze longingly at the left side of the image. I'd print this one large and hang it. Keep the whole performance don't chop off the ending.

This is a stunning scene, captured and presented perfectly. Like Ian, I favor the full frame. The bright sky adds a lot to the scene which will be lost with a crop. Really nice work, Eva.
