Red Crossbill
by Brian Gatlin
Went into the files for this Red Crossbill from last summer. This species is so variable--it seems like there are no two exactly alike--especially young birds like this young male. This was taken at a USFS constructed waterhole, in natural light and not otherwise baited. I'd like to get some shots of this species in pines since that is more typically their habitat, but they are always too high in the pines....

There's been an effort to break Red Crossbills into as many as five different species. The AOU rejected it last time around, but I think it is still under consideration.
Well done!
