Lion on the track

Yep, another Lion… Next post something that is less of a tourist attraction, I promise.

Normally I would not have been very pleased with a lion that is walking on a man-made track as I would rather photograph it in an all natural environment. However, in this case it did provide me with an opportunity to get the lion silhouetted from top to toe, which in the high grass of the pan would have been impossible to achieve. On top of that the track also serves as a compositional leading line.

This image was recently sold as a cover for a magazine; I reckon the empty space on top made it a good candidate for that purpose.

Lesson learnt: tracks and roads are in most cases elements we all generally try to avoid, but these can also help to ‘make’ an image and the trick is to see the opportunities for doing so rather than being frustrated that your subject walks on the track!

Vincent, I can't say I've seen a lion shot like this. It's not perfect I suppose (the lion might've posed better ), but it's certainly a unique scene. The leading line you mention, the short DoF and the monochromatic color palette all work quite well, IMO. Congrats on the cover!

Well put together and evocative of a hot, dangerous and dusty place. The lesson is a good one, it seems to me. The first rule in any photography is to discern the image a subject contains.

Vincent, I think it is funny you said it was sold for a magazine cover, because I was thinking that very thing with the open room at the top...that is would be a good candidate for that or a tourist brochure. I like the brown undertones and the trail does make a good comp.

Really cool Vincent - I like the uniqueness..... Only suggestion I have is that it might be better with somewhat higher contrast. Really cool monotone feel here though.

I have never had any qualms about featuring certain man-made objects in wildlife images, and this one shows exactly why. The view is clear, as you have mentioned, and the road certainly leads one's eyes towards the subject. Lovely image, and fit to grace the cover of a magazine.

Congrats on the sale. You already said why it works. I like how you were restrained on going too orange for that "sunset silhouette".

Nice composition and silhouette Vincent. I can definitely understand why they selected this for a cover. :toast:

Wow, awesome image Vincent! Great pose from the lion. The lighting looks amazing! I can definitely see why they chose it for a cover, congrats!
