Trout lily (+ REPOST)

In the spring, these flowers pop up randomly in our wooded area. This flower was growing beside a tree (background is the bark) and was lit by the setting sun while the tree was in the shade.

Canon Rebel T1i. 180mm macro lens. F/22 for 1/8 sec. ISO 200. Tripod mounted, natural lighting.

Just lovely, I would have like the BG to be even darker maybe to add more pop to this beautifully composed and lit lily ! :wavey:

Carolyn I like this nice yellow color lily in excellent light. The contrast against BG is excellent. Overall composition also very good. Well done. :toast:

Beautiful flower Carolyn... great detail, and I love the composition.. the curls in the petals complete the picture for me!

Good comp and pose of the lily. The contrast is a bit harsh and could be tamed some (highlight/shadow tool). I agree about darkening the BG even more.

Ok, here is a version with a dark background and toned down contrast. Does this appear to be a better photo? I often do dark backgrounds with my photos but try to include some of the background when possible. In this case possibly it detracted more than added to the image? For this re-edit I made the background totally black. When I darkened it just some, it looked kind of strange and mottled to me. Thanks for comments and suggestions.

Carolyn - I much prefer the repost with a clean solid black background  - the light on the Lily also looks much tempered. These are relatively small Lilies and can be difficult to shoot as they grow so close to the ground.

The lighting you achieved is what makes this for me. Well, composition, detail, DOF, put this over the top. Fantastic work Carolyn.

Great image. I agree with trying a slightly changed bckgrd; however I would like to see a little detail. To each his own (-: The only other item I would try is to crop the left side inward a little more.

Thanks for sharing this image.

The original is good, the repost fantastic!! Love these flowers but don't get to see them too often. This is terrific closeup.

I like the original but the re-post is even better, it really shows the lily off to its glory. Great composition, I really like that upper right petal how it just rises above everything and seems to catch the light first.

I love these flowers and this is a great look at one. I really like how you've used the long stem to fill the frame with motion. I'll be the contrarian and wish for a softer background, to me this feel stark and I think of these flowers a gently flowing.
