Aged Post

Gallery: Weekly ChallengePosted May 23, 2012106 views6 comments
Taken along a Kansas road a period of time ago.
The weathered hedge post, the staple for the area before advent of steel post, shows its wear and tear.
This is the main feature of the photo and the wire fence becomes part of the presentation.
This was a hard photo to process--high contrast into the post-sunset horizon.
Self critique: reduce the green.
Nikon d700 [did not check the metadata] and Nikorr 14-24 lens.
Capture NX2 processing.
Criticisms welcomed.

I'd hate to land on that post, ouch! Love the colors both in the sky and the grasses and that weathered post. I think this would be an interesting candidate for an "art" treatment, like Topaz Simplify or some of the Photoshop filters.

Well now, that is quite an interesting old post! But it still seems to be able to do its job. I almost wish it wasn't quite so dominant though. Perhaps if you had pulled back a bit when taking the photo it would have helped and still allowed it be the focus. Beautiful post-sunset lighting with lots of interesting clouds. I like the green grass but maybe just darkening it slightly rather than reducing the green would help. Good job processing the high contrast lighting, Larry.

I like the positioning of the post in the composition. The field is not too green for me on my
monitor. The post has a lot of character with the hollow area. The clouded sky is an additional
plus.

The green looks unnaturally bright to me. I like the sky. I don't like the placement of the horizon. Seems too centered. My personal take on this would be a vertical, but I have a personal bias. The post has plenty of character and could be worked into the scene as a silhouette.

Thanks for the comments.
Guess I was wrong about the grass.
the post was basically a silhouette but I drew out the shadows.
Vertical might have improved the comp, too. It was windy during the session and the near grass was in movement. Sometimes movement is OK but I've not tried much of that concept except on water.
I've learned a lot from you comments so thank you.
