Dawn reflection

Gallery: Weekly ChallengePosted May 30, 2012416 views10 comments
This picture was taken from the upper terrace at Mammoth Hot Springs at dawn last March looking across what 2-3 years ago was one of the most colorful areas of the springs. Now it's dry and the snow did a nice job of subtly reflecting the sky colors. (5D, 24-70 f2.8 @ 34 mm, f/16, 0.4 s, iso 200, tripod and cable release)

Those colors sure are nice. The larger version is nice to look at. My only nit is how the tree on the right blends into the cliffs. Not really much you can do about that though depending on if this was the best view of the sky. I might have opted for a shot taken more from the right side. Still a beautiful scene nonetheless.

Love the lighting in this photo, Mark! The beautiful lighting in the sky is casting a nice glow on the snow. Too bad the spring is now dry but the snow does a great job of making everything look beautiful. The larger version makes me feel like I am actually in the scene. The stark trees add good foreground interest but I also agree with Peter about the tree on the right. But still a wonderful capture, Mark.

Mark, you have captured burning sky colors. Excellent composition with nice color reflections in white snow. Well done. :toast:

Love the soft light or "glow" across the snow, a most inviting scene Mark.
Great sense of depth viewed large, can't pick on anything here..
I like this very much as posted, beautiful work! :toast:

Beautiful colors, Mark! I also like the way the two foreground trees frame the mountains, and the smaller tree farther away lends extra depth and leads the eye to the mountains.

Snow is an ideal subject for this challenge. I really like the way the snow is conflicted, on one side picking up the pink from the clouds while in the shadows catching blue from another part of the sky. I really like the way the higher elevations catch a bit of sunlight. This has a nice overall tone. Seems like a nice tight composition to me.
