Surrounded + Repost #2

Lately that is how I have been feeling regarding photography. Cameras are everywhere and everyone is engaged in it. And as I stand by watching it all pass me by I feel surrounded and almost fretful of getting caught up in the flow that I know will have to happen someday.

That fretful day when I can no longer obtain film for my old relic-styled large format camera will come sooner than I want it too and then my camera will actually just a display item in my shows rather than the actual camera that makes my photos.

This photo is the film counter part to my previous photo posted about a month back HERE. In fact the two photos are actually two weeks apart. I was amazed to see how quickly the water level dropped in the Sierra this year.

Your feed back on this photo is much appreciated. Large version added please take a look at the detail.

4x5, 150mm at f16 and 1/4 second + 81b warming filter.

Wow! Intense scene, with lots of detail. I really like this, and think the shutter speed was chosen well to show off the motion...

I love the spring green sneaking into this photo from the edges (and a little island in the middle). While some locations that have been photographed a lot are getting tiresome for me, I continue to be excited by variations on this spot. This has to be one of the most exultant sections of flowing water in all creation.

Kent, that is a fitting and well put description of this location. Thanks.

Exquisite. The dark edges really keep me centered on the action.

Youssef,

Can't argue with Kent's comments - well said on all accounts. The water flow here (read, chosen ss) is just beautiful here. And anyone who's stood here knows how awkward it is...

I love the comp and layout here, but do have a small nit. If it were mine, I might try and squeeze a little more detail out of the rocky areas. Not so much as that I'm looking to see more detail, but more for the heavier contrast look since the top and right frame the scene with quite a bit of darkness. Hope that makes sense, and more on the personal choice than anything that needs correcting. No matter, I'd still be proud to be the owner of this tranny.

Yeah, this is nice! I like the comp, and I'm going to have to get one from here when there is some green on that little dogwood as there is in this fine shot! I too have to agree with Kent's comments.

Thanks Lon for the suggestion. I have been struggling with that part of the image. Here is a rework of that area. Any more thoughts?

Wow. This is awesome Youssef. Probably one of my faves from you. The repost is better, but I still think some of the shadow areas look too dark. Most noticeably the ULC and middle right portion of the image. The water flow is amazing. This is just a fantastic capture. Congrats :toast: :toast:

That's the ticket Youssef! You know one of the things that did was bring out more richness in color. The only other thing I can think of working on is the dark pool on the right. But knowing this is probably Velvia, compressed range with whatever scanner, and there probably ain't much detail to extract from there - and lightening that area would just bring noise. Unless, you gave Tony's Darks Triple Play a try. Last resort you could try some cloning (small opacity technique) to bring in some texture.... But again, I'm suggesting from a point of view if it were mine... you may be fine that area on the right,it's totally subjective of course.

Dang it, it's just one of those images that deserves all the tweaks you can bring to bear and then print it big!

The downward looking view and the energy of the rushing water has resulted in a very dynamic image. And, when you add the lovely processing and presentation you have a sure winner.

Really well done, Youssef. :toast:

Lon,

Thanks so much for the useful feedback and the encouragement to pull everything that I can from this tranny. Here is one more go at it and I am really surprised and pleased at what I was able to pull out in that dark area on the right in terms of real detail. How does this look now?

Fantastic water textures Youssef. Fine job with the comp. The 2nd repost addressing the dark rocks is excellent.

I know this is a waterfall photographed from above, but I love the way the 2D rendering flattens is all out into just shapes and textures. Fascinating.

Great job Youssef! Just what the doctor ordered! Wouldn't have thought to check back, so thanks for adding the "#2" back to the title of the post.

Even from the web sized view it sure looks like you did a great job getting some detail there and mitigating the dark area so it's not so large. It's no longer an eye magnet for me.

Thanks for taking the time to rework it. I hope you are able to get a nice print from this.

This is excellent Youssef. I really like the perspective here looking straight down on the water. The 2nd repost looks like the one to me.
