A very beautiful cascade. Perfect shutter speed.

Bill,

Before I comment, I'm gonna push back on you a little bit. Can't think of having done this before... but I'll ask you. Which of these do you prefer, and why. Evaluate these last two images and tell us what you think. I'm happy to offer my thoughts, but lets give this a try.

Lon, great idea--but we MAY differ. I'll get back in more detail tomorrow, family stuff going on--you know I really want to hear your OP.

OK Lon, let me try this. Well, first I like both but for different reasons. When I'm shooting something like this "waterfall" with cascades, I like shooting close/intimates of the cascades, and a distant, overall image to give viewers a sense of scale and surroundings (the first, vertical post). Then I try to shoot some close-ups of the wonderful little cascades of water, the greens and the rocks around which the water flows. All of the details, focused on the flow. RE: See my comment on your recent post of a close-up of the water pouring over a single rock with some awesome light included--I love that, for reasons such as why the photo I am posting with this (sorry!) is one of my personally done favorites. Soooooooooooo... with all that said, I still think I enjoy the vertical, overall view of this place. It's peaceful, serene and just beautiful. And I think my capture and processing were a bit better on it. That's just my OP, what's yours (meaning Lon's and anyone else's too!). THANKS Lon, great idea here.

Yup, exactly. First one Bill, even though it's a wider angle is all about the cascades - and the environs. The comp is strong and clean and yes, processing a bit better. This second one seems a step backwards to me. And even though it's a tighter view, it's more cluttered; the errant sticks, flat rock surfaces, my eye wanders around and never settles. It's often difficult composing a vertical subject with an intimate horizontal frame. So, a number of things that make your first one much better.

My intent and I hope you didn't take offense (I don't think you did) was to push a little to get a self-critique and understand where you're at in terms of recognizing those qualities - and clearly you have. BTW, it's not that this image here isn't a good one, but personally the previous image is on another level. Hope that makes sense.

Oh, and this intimate cascade, awesome! I hope you post that in it's own thread. Certainly deserving!

Thanks Bill,
Lon

OK, cool Lon--I wasn't quite sure where you were going, but I agree 1,000%. Also, the color seems a bit off in the second one--as a result of longer exposure or processing, I'm still not 100% sure. I think b). Have some nice side-angle views of it that will come, and one of the top portion.

Nah, no offense taken whatsoever. I appreciate all that you do and trust you implicitly so I was neither offended nor worried. Appreciate the honesty.

I may have posted the real nice cascade one a year or two ago??? I'll have to double check. Something close to it anyway. THANKS!
