Pirate ship sunset

This will probably be my last post from mono lake for quite some time. Just goes to show how productive my first evening was. This was taken a few yards from "Mono blaze" where there was a little beach that had a good view of pirate ship tufa. The light and colors were just so great this evening that I almost feel I won't see something that nice for a long long time. Anyways, comments and critiques appreciated. Large version included.

What a special moment and spectacular sunset. My only suggestion would be to crop so the horizon line is not so centered, although I would hate to lose any of that sky. Then print is big and hang it proudly.

Thanks everyone! Patricia I see what you mean with the crop, but I could always crop from the bottom to keep the entire sky in there.

Thanks Todd. It really is something else and not like any sunset I've seen before.

Amazing! what a sky! maybe I would have used a bit slower shutter for the water, but this is just my personal taste.

Peter,

What a glorious night you had at South Tufa! And here I discouraged you from sunsets at the lake because wind... what do I know?

I love the color and glow here. I kinda wish this was open to the left and those tufas were on the other side, but that's minor. You've got a great view and capture of those "shipwrecked" tufa.

What a great night to be there. so glad this came together for you.

Thanks Shantikara! I would have preferred a longer exposure, but having done so would blow the highlights in the sky, although I could have probably blended two images I wanted a more natural feel to the overall scene.

Thanks Lon, I don't know what you were thinking saying this usually isn't a good sunset spot because I get there and within hours get one of the best sunsets of my life! Haha. I kinda wish the image was sorta flipped as well to get nice light on the side tufas. I probably could have found a spot, but I didn't want to miss any of this light.

If Mars had water, I imagine this is what it would look like. Beautiful sky and color. I might be temped to crop the bottom darkness out. Either way it's cool. :toast:

Thanks Jeremy, your right this could very well be mars with water. I'm actually working this for a potential client (That's something I don't say too often) and they were eager to jump the gun. I'm going to run the original and a cropped version to them to see what they prefer. I wish I could print this really large, but theres just not enough detail in the original, but still enough to get a 24x36. I'll try to get a cropped version up here for comparison.

I am utterly jealous of the light you got. Last time I was there, it was big ol Boring Blue. Nice work.

Thanks Kory, If the skies are looking empty I'll usually wait for twilight and shoot some star shots to fill the sky and "replace" the clouds. Even with boring blue skies here this place is great (at least I think).

Peter, I like this and your Mono Blaze images most of those you have posted from Mono Lake. Perhaps you might crop/clone the bright tufa on the far right edge.

Thank you Nick and Doug! Doug this was taken just minutes before Mono blaze, in fact that was the image I shot right after. Now that you mention the tufa on the right I could probably crop it out. Didn't even really notice it.

Thank you Tom! For those wondering about the bottom here is a cropped version, also cropped from the right to remove the small tufa.

I think this is the best of the series Peter. I would prefer a crop somewhere between the original and the repost. The colors and open views are wonderful.

Thanks Michael, I'm torn on where to crop from the re-post because I really don't want to do anything with the sky as far as cropping. I might be able to take some off the top. Maybe go for a true pano?
