Red wolf & pup (C)

Photographed at the Miller Park Zoo. The pups are about 3 months old, but only seen early in the day or late in the afternoon. I like the way this one posed with mom. Taken through glass, which was clean until the adult wolves saw me and all came running to their side of the glass and jumped up with forepaws all over the glass! No way to clean it.

Nice photo, John! I like the way they both look, the mother is not too pleased with you, it seems. Unfortunately the light is a bit harsh. What you mention about the paws on the glass reminds me of my cats, they do the same on my window when they want to get in! I think the wolfs did want to get out! :toast:

Hey John,

Interesting shot - love both mom's look and junior's tongue! I wouldn't have known you were shooting through glass if you hadn't mentioned it in the commentary above - so the dirtiness of it didn't detract for me...

I find the red wolf situation interesting. A while back John Theberge argued that the wolves in and around Algonquin Park in Ontario were actually red wolves, though I haven't seen any follow-ups to their work (presumably there has been genetic studies since...). And interesting how these guys hybridize comparatively freely with coyotes while gray wolves prefer to eat (or at least kill) coyotes...

Cheers...

Nice photo! I like the wary look in the mother's eye, and the innocent curious look in the pup. The tongue lick adds lots to the photo.
Like Brad, I wouldn't have guessed this was taken through glass.
