Seeing the Unseen
by Alister Benn
Between 2009 and the end of 2011 I spent the majority of my time working on a night photography eBook, shooting in the Himalaya, Tibet, Spain, Indonesia and around my home in SW China, especially Yading National Park.
It pretty much defined who I was (an my wife) for that whole period of time. In March I published the eBook (thankfully) and managed to get my life back, including shooting before it is dark!
This shot became the cover and allowed me to coin the expression Seeing the Unseen, which I feel really captures what Night Photography is all about. Imagining things that cannot be seen and basing your compositions on invisible subjects that become evident over longer exposures.
A truly fascinating subject and one I am delighted to call work!
D3x 70-300 - 331s @ f5 ISO 200. Taken on the north coast of Spain, moonlight.
