Powerful Forces

Powerful forces of Earth and Water contrast in this intimate look look at the Ohanapecosh River in Mt. Rainier NP. The water inexorably carves and smoothes the rock while illuminating its recesses with reflected aquamarine blue. Moss, grasses and lichens populate the thinnest accumulation of soil on the face of the rock. The fallen log, in its death, nurses plant growth. Perhaps we see the birth of a gorge, the beginning of an extension of forest...

How do you see it?

I can see what you're getting here in terms of concept Catherine and I like most of it. It's just that log in the upper right weakens the composition for me. I'm not sure much could have been done about it however other than zooming in some more but that might have limited your composition too. The shutter speed is well chosen and is the exposure.

I like the dynamic nature of this image and also like the chosen shutter speed. i agree the trunk seems to weaken the overall composition somewhat - I might crop just a wee bit off the top to remove the hint of water above the trunk.

Catherine,

I echo what Kah Kit mentions.

Beautiful color and flow. I love the diagonal of the fallen log in the upper corner. Excellent comp and a stand-out image, IMO.

Interesting image Catherine. I like the shutter speed you used here to keep some detail in the water. The small plants and grass clinging to the rocks are a nice touch. I might consider cropping a bit from the top to exclude the water above the log.
