Sunset over Ardmair Bay, Inverpolly, Scotland

This is one of the last film images I took during my trip to Scotland on 1-2-1 workshop with Ian C. Amazing view point with moody blue clouds and quiet sunset colors.

Pentax 67II
Pentex 55-100mm
Velvia50
Lee 1.5 Stop HE Gradient Filter

Thanks for having a look and for your comments on my previous posts.

A lot of negative space but the shapes work quite well together. You've got the familiar Ian C colour palette going nicely.

Thanks Kah Kit and Mark.

I also took digital version (about 5 min after the Velvi50 version and the light was not changing that fast..... sunset light at this latitude is long and draw out in comparison to the lower 48's in the US). The digital version looks a little anemic in comparison even after increasing the blue, red, and yellow saturation +20 for each in LR4. I know the digital needs more work, but I generally don't like to spend a lot of time in PS. I did very little to the scan file of the Velvia50 version other than clean dust spots and sharpening.

This popped up and I immediately thought this was Ian's image. Nope, Eva's! It's funny how format and Velvia brands an image! Absolutely gorgeous. The clouds add such a fine touch and an air of movement to such a serene scene. Comparing the digital version to the Velvia version really makes me long for film again!

Eva, which image (film or digital) looks most like what you saw at the time?

Thanks Bill...... Exactly why I wanted to get back to film at least to some degree..

Hi Carol - Neither! The digital version needs a lot more work and is a bit on the cyan side even after fooling around with color balance and WB (I have very little patience working in PS and LR though LR is OK in generl). The Velvia version is more vivid, but film always was and depending on the film, with bias towards different colors. Unfortunately, my favorite films, Kodachrome and Ektachrome are no longer available. I prefer the film version (but I did film for over 30 years before going digital). .....but what is real and what is our perception, interpretation of a scene? I think that is what makes photography art.

The clouds on the right appear to look like a huge wave about to crash down on the Bay. Your exposure and light control are excellent in this photo. Very nice and enjoyable to look at. So why aren't you doing more film???

Eva, thanks for your explanation. What matters most is which format gives you the end result that you prefer. I was just curious from a technical standpoint if either format was capable of capturing the real colors of the scene that you witnessed and from what you said it appears that neither one was. Very interesting.

The first thing that struck me when I opened this image was the utter stillness. I'm awed by this. Amazing job.

I like the moody blues in this one and the contrast with the pastel pinks. It looks like you had an incredibly productive trip to Scotland.

Thanks Youssef.... and I will be doing more film since I now have a Pentax 67II. I am sorry I sold my Mamiya 645 back in 2005 but I do like the larger frame of the 67II. I also have 2 other film cameras which I have not used in eons...... a YashicaMat twin reflex, that my Grand Dad gave me and an old press camera, an Omega 120 that my uncle gave me though it has some severe corrosion issues from the NJ/NY area humidity. I have used them both in the past.... maybe I should use them again just for fun.

Many thanks too Nancy and Brian.

...and I do need to thank Ian C for getting me to these wonderful places on various workshops and the inspiration his work provided to me to get back to film. I missed that quality of film. Difficult to explain but I see the difference clearly.

Now those are some awesome colors Eva. The digital image definitely needs some post processing! Very well done.

Another great example of your "film excursion". Love the first version with its deep colors.

The sky in this looks amazing Eva, I love the saturation throughout this. All my visits to Scotland I am yet to see a sky even close to this.

Cheers, Gary.

Excellent, Eva. The shapes and light are fantastic. Bit of a halo around the black objects, but looks to be just on pixel from sharpening.
