Wafting Willet

7/2/12 I was waiting for a shot of a Black Skimmer in late afternoon from the Bolsa Chica bridge in Huntington Beach when this lone Willet circled twice and came in for a landing in the pickle weed. Willets are so common that we have more images than we know what to do with; consequently, we don't shoot them any more. For a lark, no pun intended, I snapped off a few shots and this was one of them.

D800 Nikkor 200-400mm 400mm F/8 1/1250 ISO400 Manual White Balance Auto spot metered Cropped slightly in CS6 The shot is presented largely as taken with little adjustment.

Great light on this guy, and wonderful wind-spread. The diagonal lines work well.
Very nice image!

Willets are like deviled eggs—you can never have too many! Besides, they are a fine looking bird, and this is a good image of one.

Hi Patrick:

I think this image works really well. Great dynamic pose, exposure looks very good. Including the habitat makes this much different than a willet against a blue sky background. We'd all be happy to have an image like this in our portfolio. I like this one very much.

A beautiful action image well composed & in great light. The pose of the bird is perfect & the lower grass border enhances it. nice background as well.
