Not Just a Growin' boy

I haven't been out too much lately due to a camping trip to OR and other goings on. So hadn't seen Barney or any of the other deer I've been tracking. So decided to catch the evening move to the "greener pastures" last night. While I got lots of images, none really excited me too much and there were lots of little nits to them. So took this photo and resized it as a portrait to eliminate lots of unwanted background, etc. A crop to about 50% of original. The buck I believe is the one I ID'd earlier as right behind Barney in development. I'm now wondering when their growth will stop and they start rubbing the velvet off. While the photo may look like it is too cool, that is what things look like out there. The ground veg has mostly dried up to a lt. beige color rather than a warmism yellowish that is often seen. I'll be leaving this week for a couple of weeks in ME and MA, so no further updates until I return. Comments and critiques welcome.

Nice head shot of the deer. The notches in his left ear should make this guy easy to ID if you get more photos of him.. Thanks for sharing.

Very nice rack on this guy - you did well considering the low lighting and elements in front of you but I would really like to see both ears and the image is a little flat - maybe a boost in color temperature would rectify that

What I like about this Peter is that curious look with that muzzle stretching forward. I can see Luke's point about the ears, although it does not bother me much. The OOF green in front is a little distracting to my eye. Personally I am not too fond of square crops, which makes me curious about your original to see if there are other crop options to be considered here.

Vincent- I'm attaching the original image so you can see what I started with. Because of the post and the cage around the oak on the left, I decided to eliminate that as it didn't help the image at all. At first I was just going to do a vertical, but then I saw I had cut the legs off, so that would look weird. At that point I thought a square portrait shot was the best I could wring out of the image and I went with that. I would appreciate your thoughts on how best to deal with this image. It's something that comes up a lot and I'm not sure I deal with it in the best manner.
