I stepped out of my comfort zone today and started experimenting with my lens and how fast I could get the shutter speeds. I was pleasantly surprised with the results. This was shot at the Petone Estuary at low tide today.

550D
500mm (on monopod)
f/6.3
1/2000 sec
ISO 400

Some sharpening and cropped about 30% off.

Excellent. I would say that your experiment was successful! These are beautiful birds. I like the pose and the iridescent colors. We have the Belted Kingfisher up here and I would love to get a shot someday.

Good colors and nice pose. I do think you could crop off abit more of the post. Thanks for sharing, have enjoyed your series of kingfisher photos.

The look back pose is very nice. The post is a bit dominant with it's size. The larger version is showing quite a bit of noise in the background. I'd run a round or two of noise reduction on the background only.

Nice image of the Kingfisher, Toya. It came through very well. I do see a fair amount of noise in the bg of the larger image, but thta's easily removed in post processing, should you choose.
