Somber Light

Ben Loyal at Lochan Hakel, Caithness, Scotland

Just as we arrived, I parked myself here for a while since the rust colored grass against the somber gray sky caught my eye. The sky was heavy with clouds but in less than 30 min, the light started to break through. My previous image was taken almost an hour after this one on a Transient Light Workshop.

Pentax 67II
Pentax 67 55-100mm
Lee 1.5 Stop HE Gradient
Velvia 50

Multiple exposure scan on an Epson V750 using a Better Scanning adjustable holder with ANR glass and Silverfast Ai Studio 8 software. This is also the first time I used the built-in IT8 calibration in Studio 8 with a Velvia 50 target from Wolf Faust. My prior scanner calibration used a non-discript target and Monaco software. I rescanned some of my previous Velvia 50 images using the correct target calibration and found it makes a big difference in the effort required to get the color right compared to the transparency.

Thanks all for having a look. C&C always welcome and appreciated.

Somber? The vibrancy in the foreground colors is quite striking and does contrast well with the muted colors in the background. The diagonal makes for a very dynamic image as well. I like this one a lot.

Beautiful mountain image. Love the reflection and of course the warm colors of the grass preventing the image from being to cold and a great focal point. Nice work Eva!

Another real beauty -
The vibrant FG does not seem "somber" to me , enhancing the cooler mountain and reflection extremely well. Great contrats here.

Beautiful natural looking scan Eva. Lovely colours and very much as I remember it. I am very very impressed with the Silverfast scanning software and the results from your V750 next time I see you I reckon I will have to get some input as to your scanning technique. Really lovely quality too it.

Lovely Eva. The color contrast from the grass in the FG really makes this for me. Scottish weather sure makes for some great photography!

Great colors. You did a fantastic job on scanning the slide (noticed that before reading your description).

Stillness, breathless, a moment in time captured beautifully. The simple composition brings a quiet peacefulness to the viewer.

Beautiful and natural looking Eva. It looks slightly tilted down to the right, but that may just be an illusion from the curving shoreline.

Pretty amazing how those two clumps of rusty grass stand out like they're spot lit and really set off all of the cool colors in the rest of the scene. Lovely picture.

Great place to park yourself Eva. Lovely comp and I also really like the rusty grass contrasting with the blue. The greens perhaps look slightly over-saturated... a little neon looking. Beautiful shot.
