I believe this is a male broad-tail but as usual I probably have it misidentified. The BG is pretty messy.

The hummer looks OK in the larger image, as you noted the BG is very busy, maybe a higher shutter speed and less depth of field would have helped with the BG. Where did you take this? It does look like the broad-tail in my guide to western birds. Thanks for sharing.

F5 would blur the background a bit more and would help the bird to stand out. With such a small bird you probably don't need the depth of field that f8 gives you. Nice bird, good pose. Could be a bit sharper.

I think you have the ID correct. A good bird and a good photo. The background is pretty distracting, though. Maybe select all bu tthe bird and apply a heavy gaussian blur?

Hummers are difficult to get a decent shot but I do like the iridescent shine and the pose. With my D300s I will go up to iso 800 if I need the shutter speed and wider aperture to help get a decent image.

I actually like the background and find it interesting here John, I'd crop a bit closer if the image can take it.

I tend to agree with Nate on the bg-I find it interesting. The bird does seem just a bit soft.
