We had a pelagic trip on the weekend and it was a chance to test out the auto-focus on the 5D3. It certainly locked onto things quicker than the 1D2n and seemed to hold them when they dropped below the horizon. There were still a lot of out-of focus shots however

5D3 300/f4 1.4X
ISO 400 f5.6 1/3200

cheers
Rob

Very nice. Pelagic bird photography certainly is a stress test for the gear. I remember what a large percentage of my shots went straight to the trash when I did this with a film camera and manual lenses!

Rob - Excellent - it sure locked on well here!

Do you use the setting that focuses only on the closest object? (Don't know what it is called wih Canons) It's been invaluable for me with BIF shots. Nothing interferes - not the horizon, other birds, or even things that briefly come between your bird and camera.
Tack-sharp, perfect exposure, and great OOF ocean.
Well done!

I like how the bird stands out against that nice blue background and interesting to see that tiny bit of yellow on the end of the beak, way to go.

Tack sharp on this frame Rob. I really like the separation between the Albatross and the BG, yet there is still enough detail in the water to give a real sense of place which is so important with these Pelagics. Very well done and enjoy the new camera.

Great bird, sweet flight shot too. I really like the choppy ocean. Gives the image a hard-earned feel.

Very Nice Work Rob
