Please excuse Mel if he looks a little tired, and perhaps a bit grumpy. Mel is a VERY old toad.

He has lived under our slate patio for at least ten years. He comes out every dark summer night and sits between the gutter and the stone house. And there he waits for his meals to come hopping, crawling or flying by.

One would think that the insects would have spread the word by now: pssst - don't go over by where the gutter meets the house. But no, Mel never needs to change up his hunting spot to eat well.

I've long been wanting to photograph Mel to pay tribute to him. After all, we're on a first-name basis by now, and he never misses any of our summer evening gatherings. Truth be told, I've become rather fond of him.

The fact that he's a creature of the night always gave me pause. So I had a beer and a half last night and threw all caution to the wind, and decided to give Mel's portrait a go.

C&C appreciated as always.

This is so great! Love Mel's expression and the story that accompanies the wonderful image. He doesn't really look up to catching anything, but he obviously is. Nice job handling the lighting. Very fun photo.

I like both the image and the story that goes with it. I have no idea if 10 is old for a toad, but he certainly looks like a veteran. You even caught his grumpiness in this shot. Very good eye level perspective, and excellent job with the lighting.

Neat shot and story. Your toad looks very contented. Photographically, my minor nit is that I'd like to see the shadowed eye a bit better.

Excellent job recording Mel, and it seems that he has earned the recognition. To me the image has a surreal quality, which seems entirely appropriate to the subject, location, and time.

Great narrative. You've captured the character of this toad very well and given him a personality. Very interesting and engaging. Nice job

Fun photo and story, Rebecka. Nature can enrich our lives in so many ways and sounds like old Mel has added some amusement to yours! Love the expression and pose of Mel. He seems like he is looking at you and wondering why you are interrupting his rest/hunting. He does look well fed! Amazing he has followed that same routine for at least 10 years. . .

As a matter of fact, he looks just like I feel right now - A bit grumpy
