OK a little setup on this one. Each morning when I reach my place of employment (around 6:30am) I always check out a small pond in front of our building. Yesterday morning (Aug. 31st) the was a really neat BLUE moonset over the pond. So I figured to get up early this morning (Sep. 1st) and catch it at a much closer small lake to my house. Dang if that moon never seemed to set, however on my walk back to my car I followed this Great Blue Heron and got quite close with my puny 70-300mm.

Love how he is gripping the bark, and the lighting is really pleasing here. I started out with probably the same exact lens you are using, and got a ton of bird images. You just have to be better at sneaking up on 'em.
