Fireweed #2

Thanks everyone who commented on the first fireweed post (which was a vertical). This one is similar, but with a landscape orientation.

It's a little more dynamic with the curved line of fireweed (the other was straight). I think it offers a better sense of the expanse of the fire too, because the burnt-trees are not so tightly packed and you can see much deeper into this image. While it doesn't show well, behind the fireweed in the lower left - the tips of new lodgepole pine are just barely starting to show - 9 years after the fire.

5D Mark II, 24-105 lens @60mm
1/100s @ f.11 ISO 400
3 image stack

I have a 3rd image to post from this series. Once it's up, I'm curious to know which of the 3 you all prefer.

Thanks so much :wavey:

karen, i like this one too. it evokes a different reaction from your previous post. again, the layers are good but obviously this is more expansive and less oppressive than the previous one (but that oppression/tension was, i think a good thing!). i'd be tempted to try to deal with those two distracting trunks on the left - get going with the clone tool?

Really liked your last post Karen, in my openion this one is even better, this type of scene has always appealed to me. Beautifully seen and presented.

I liked the tighter comp in your last post. IMO, it was a stronger presentation. This one is quite lovely, also but I miss the extra layer of the yarrow(?) in front and the energy of the vertical orientation. Really nice work on both versions

I like the colour contrast here Karen with the colourful fireweed (willow herb in the UK) in front of the more mono backdrop. Nice composition and the image has some nice depth.

Karen, it's amazing to look at this image from Alberta and see how much it looks like Alaska, right down to the dead trees and nearly-bloomed out fireweed. I know this is a bit nit-picky, but those 2 branches coming at angles on the left are distracting to me, I guess because there's nothing to balance them, but that's just me! But I like the overall image a lot, and that's coming from someone who lives in a place that looks a whole like your image. I like how the dead trees in the mid-ground stand out from the distant background. This is easy to look at.

Of the three, I think I like this one best.
With the fireweed taking such a prominent position, in the forground, it gives a positive feeling of new beginnings and a sense of the past with the burned trees in the background.

Very nice Karen!
The image makes a great statement of rising from the ashes with renewed life, entering another cycle.
I like the comp that gives both the near and long view, well done :toast: :toast:
