Ocean Point Dawn

Just before sunrise at Ocean Point in Boothbay, Maine.

One of my favorite beaches in Maine especially at sunrise. This was taken just before sunrise at mid tide. Before the sun rises, this rocky coastline takes on a blue gray metallic look complimenting the warming glow of the sky. Even though this was taken on a July morning there was a cool ocean breeze coming in off the 52F water.

Canon 5DM2
Canon 16-35mm f/2.8L at 35mm
ISO100 2.0sec at f/16
2-Stop Reverse ND

Thanks for looking and for any C&C.

Eva, I really enjoy looking at this scene. The large version is really worth the look! I like the overall feel of this, comp, light and color are very nice. I especially like the detail you have in the rocks which is seen so much better in the large version. Very nice!

Wonderful colors to this shoreline scene, Eva. The composition gives a calming like at the beginning of a new day.
I might try to raise the black point ever so slightly.

The larger upload looks terrific Eva, the image definitely portrays a feeling of dawn. I like the transition of colour in the morning sky and the nice shadow detail.

I really enjoy your natural processing here, and how you let the dark tones truly be dark. Many photographers are intent on showing extreme detail in the shadow tones, which leads to very flat images.

I do enjoy the texture in the lower left, but I also feel a bit of a disconnect between it and the water to the right. I feel like I would want to see a light step to the left, then a pivot to the right to show more ocean.

The sky and water both look very refreshing -- especially on a hot day here in Southern California.

Thanks all for your input. There is a bit of a story with this image which is why I decided to post this here today. Yesterday, this was a piece I had in my bin art at the "Art on the Waterfront" show in Boothbay Harbor, Maine in the Boothbay Region Art Foundation display tent. A guy came up to me and said, "I remember you from last year. I loved your framed version of an Ocean Point image but could not buy it then. I sail these waters all the time, and this image just reminds me of them from a sailor's point of view. I don't know if he was a lobsterman, fisherman, or just a casual sailor but he certainly sounded like a Mainer and did not look like the fancy sailors that visit here. Most likely a lobsterman since they are the only ones who get this close to these rocks. I am certainly glad my images made an impression on him. As I went through my bin art with him, to find the image he liked (though I knew which one), there were others images too that reminded him of "his" favorite place" and of course I was certainly delighted they made an impression too.

You all know that framed images are sometimes way out of reach of most people's budgets. I remembered my first encounter with this person and thought to include a non-framed but matted version at this year's show. That made all the difference to him.

I find a similar mind set with my Cape Breton images. People find a connection to a place they love or miss due to economic need to move elsewhere. Anyway, thanks all.

Hi Ben - Appreciate your input. To the right of this scene is Ram Island Lighthouse, Boothbay Harbor, Maine so I will have to post that scene in M&N which I may do in a few days.

Eva, the clearcut division between the cooler shades in the foreground and the warming ones in the sky works very well for me. Your image makes me feel like breathing the fresh air of this morning. Your choice of shutter speed still enhances the mystic atmosphere of this scene for me.

Very pretty Eva. I was watching some canoeing/sea kayaking DVD's this past weekend, both of Maine & Lake Superior, and this image looks so much like what I saw - gorgeous country!! Wish I was there!!
