Royal Rainbow

Here is one of the many images I shot over the Labor day north rim event. After a lackluster sunrise at Point imperial, we headed out to cape royal to see the views. It was raining on and off during the morning and once the rain finally cleared out of the canyon a nice rainbow emerged from the bottom of the canyon. I liked the way it spread across the interior of the canyon and tried to get a little more intimate with the shot rather than get a wide view. As always comments and critiques are welcome.

Very nice Peter. I like the play of light and shadow in the canyons along with the added benefit of the rainbow. Nice choice to extract a more intimate view.

Wicked shot, Peter! To be totally honest, i think id actually like it even more w/o the bow--the light is so awesome it almost looks like the canyon is underwater or something.

Thanks Wayne and Stan.

Stan, either way I would have liked it. The light didn't last long like this and the rainbow was there pretty much the whole time it was lit up in the canyon. First time I got a rainbow in a shot though!

Beautiful light peter. Even without the rainbow, this has a great appealing quality to it.

Fabulous light Peter. I tend to agree the rainbow in this case could be perceived as academic. However it is also true that the only bit of the image that holds little visual interest is the dark triangle on the bottom left corner, fortuitously the rainbow cuts through it, so arguably it is better being there than not.

Excellent. This really captures the light drama that can occur here.

Simply excellent Peter. That light is just fantastic! I see Stan's point, but I like the bow...tops it off nicely I think.

Cool! Well done on the comp and the exposure. The diagonal of the bow adds movement and the dappled light is great.

My thoughts echoed Stan's. This is simply fantastic. Normally I would be all over a rainbow like this, but the splashes of light and color combined with the shapes in the valley are the real prize winner.

Thanks everyone! I suppose the scene put itself over the top by presenting this rainbow right across, but definitely not something we see every day. I would have liked to get a shot without it, but the light didn't stay like this for long.

Peter,

This is glorious! The dappled light on the landscape is awesome enough - add a rainbow... don't know how this could be any more special.

Having the polarizer all the time on the lens does have some advantage huh  Nice shot man. That light was glorious. By the time I switched my lenses this was gone. Glad you caught it.

This is soooo nice, Peter. The light is absolutely fantastic, with the golden dappled foreground and dark background - and that rainbow puts it over the top. I know this spot well, and you definitely isolated some of the most interesting parts of the scene. Not much else to say here other than "perfect".

Thanks Alex, this scene really took me by surprise. With all the scattered showers passing through I knew the late morning light would do some crazy things, but to have the rainbow appear where it did was just incredible. Definitely one of my best (IMO).
