Curls

Curls, October 19th 2010

When these blooms start to die, their stamens become curly and look like little yellow worms.

I was struck by the way the sunlight was playing off this stamen.

My intent here, was to focus in, very tightly on the stamen and allow the petals (front and rear) to blur out and highlight it's beauty.

I was really trying for something, out of my norm, for this shot. I love to focus in on the tiny details of my subjects and do my best to highlight them, with what nature has provided. :)

Everything is straight from the lens, with a little minor contrast adjustment in PS

Panasonic DMC-TZ3
Focal Length 42mm
Shutter Speed 1/200 sec
ISO/Film 100

I like the abstract shapes and colors, Stephen, with the sharp focus on the contrasting stamen. My reservation with this image is with petal in the ULC obstructing the stamen. I think most viewers would be want to see more of the stamen, which you have chosen to mostly obscure with your comp. I'll be interested to read other comments on this one.

Hi Scott,

I did this on purpose, as I wanted to give a clear look at part and just a peak at the rest :) I did not know this at the time, but I found out last night, that this style actually has a name. "Shooting Through" (Ram in Floral, mentioned this to me, regarding a different image)

At the time, I took this photo, I had not idea about styles. I just had the image in my head and went with it.

Maybe, I did not do it properly :) I will have to do some more reading, on this style and give it a more educated try :)

Sure, Stephen, I am aware of the style (there are several examples in my gallery), and I assumed you did it on purpose as I commented that "you have chosen to mostly obscure..."

Excellent focus, as usual, Stephen. The foreground part of the flower obscuring part of the stamen seems to me to detract from the image a bit
