Getting There

Not quite enough shutter speed as this guy/gal caught me by surprise, so the white feathers are a bit blown and the wings a bit light IMO. Still an improvement with the Sigma I believe. D90, ISO-400, 1/800th, f-8, 500mm. Larger posted as long as it doesn't look too noisy on here. Thanks for any C&C.

Very good Bill, I like the sharpness in the face of the eagle. I think you could darken the highlights a bit and not loose detail in the dark body. Looks like you and the new lens are getting along fine. Thanks for sharing.

Shot a bit bright, but not bad. I would try to bring down the whites in post processing if you have not already done as much as you can.

Nice flight shot; the whites are gone as you noted.

Getting there indeed, Bill. The exposure on the wings looks reasonable to me, but it's hard not to blow the whites on these. If you know they're around you can take some trial shots, but when one jumps up like this it's more difficult. Are you shooting in RAW? You should be able to get quite a bit of exposure adjustment, if you are.

Nice flight shot. I really like the wing position. I agree about the whites being a bit too bright. How big of a crop is this?

Thanks everyone for the comments and advice! I did try toning down the whites a bit in Elements but behind the head, it just didn't work that well. Unfortunately, not show in RAW. And Robert, this is about a 50% crop--the bird was flying toward me, and probably spotted me and veered at a distance. Let's put it this way, it was about half the width of the lake away. I'm really impressed with the relative sharpness even with large crops with the Sigma.
