Colored Waters

Granite boulder in Bald Rock Creek, Giraween National Park, Queensland.

I loved this lone boulder in the creek, and I was pleasantly surprised to find these strong yellow and red colorations on the creek bed. I'm not sure how the colors formed, but they were pretty cool.

D80, 10-20 lens @20mm, f/9, 6 sec, ISO 100. 2 exp blend for land and sky.

Cheers.

Great photo.
Looks a bit high on the left side to me?
The contrast on each side of the rock makes the central area of water jump out. I would like to see the contrast dropped a bit on the bright water just to see how it would look.
I would also like to see if the river bed color below the rock could be brought forward by darkening that area. This would create a leading line to the rock...???
The photo might be a tad 'busy'; what about a vertical crop?

The colors here do grab me, as does the shine of the water. Excellent find, capture and post processing, IMO. Perhaps slightly darken the bright water spots a tad? For me, it's minor though. The blend also looks good and natural. It's fun to see your images of Australia. I doubt I'll ever see it in person, but this comes close.

David,

Not completely sold on this one. Can't quite put my finger on it though. I'm looking at the bright reflections in the water on either side of the big rock and think maybe something is lost in that without texture or much detail. Yeah, a bit busy, but the giant boulder does a pretty darn good job of anchoring the scene.

Actually, I think there may be some merit in Larry's crop idea; although I wouldn't go vertical. But if you wanted to simplify this and take away some of the busy-ness, how about cropping out the left shore, rock and trees? Might needs some additional cloning, but I think that really simplifies and maybe even strengthens the comp and presentation. Just a thought.

The colors are awesome! Makes me wonder if this is a warm creek with bacteria growing on the bottom. The rock adds a nice foundation to the image and I like the subdued sky with a bit of detail. Nice image David.

Those warm colors certainly draw me in. Certainly an interesting group of elements you've brought together here.
