Swainson's Hawk-pellet

This may not appeal to some but I've always been a sucker for interesting behaviors. This juvenile in Beaverhead County, Montana put on quite a show casting pellets - two of them, one right after the other. I wish I'd had my tc attached but I had just removed it in anticipation of a take-off when the action began.

7D, 1/2000, f/7.1, ISO 500, 500 f/4, shot from pickup window on 8/22/12, cropped to 50% of original image, sharpened bird and post, slight exposure adjustment in ACR, cloned out 5 tiny, OOF flying insects, no additional processing or adjustments, natural light, not baited, set up or called in

Larger version provided

The rest of the sequence can be seen here http://featheredphotography.com/blog/2012/08/26/swainsons-hawk-regurgitating-pellets/ if you're interested.

You have a genuine knack of just "happening" upon significant bird activity. Hats off to your significant patience and skill.

Have you seen the hawk with the severe deformed bill?

Interesting behavior, I've never seen it myself before.. Only evidence of it left behind.
Excellent shot as is, pity you had just removed your ext as you say..
Well done.

Great timing with wonderful details. Comp and bg are excellent. I'm sure the hawk felt better after getting rid of those! Sharon

I remember reading about this on your blog. Amazing sequence of images and this looks like a very large pellet. Excellent detail on the larger version Ron, well done.

Ron, I am one who enjoys birds exhibiting different behaviors, including behaviors a lot more subtle than this! I think 'casting pellets' is the same as 'regurgitating'? Quite interesting and thisimage immediately caught my eye.

The setting is ideal for me and the background is perfect. Your choice of dof spot on. All-in-all makes for a more than interesting image.

I've seen hummingbirds drop packages and one of these times I'm getting a photo of same. LOL

Excellent detail & great Nature story. I would be tempted to crop below the bird - the barbed wire isn't particularly enhancing (unless you want it to be part of the story).

Perfect timing! Excellent behavioral image of a natural occurrence, with perfect techs. Maybe not "nice" for some, but certainly interesting.
Very well-done!
