Union River + crop

This is a picture I made on my recent fall trip to Upper MI. I took this in the late afternoon light along a small part of the Union River in the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness Area. I was close to this location in the morning and decided then to come back and see how it looked late in the day. It was very peaceful being in this quiet place and I especially enjoyed the sounds of the water flowing over the rocks. It was a hard place for Cheri and I to leave that day.
5D3, 35mm, ISO 100, f/18, 2.5 sec and polarizer.

An appealing and inviting scene for me, Nick. The delicate light in the distance adds a lot to me as well as the subsurface elements at the bottom. I enjoy the calm flow of the creek very much.

Love the golden reflections in the stream along with the tranquil mood, beautiful color and comp Nick. Peaceful stream and autumn colors, don't get any better than that.

I'm a sucker for Fall landscapes, you captured a very simple yet elegant scene here. Fall is way to short for photographers.

Exposure latitude and detail is excellent in the larger version, Nick. Your comment about being peaceful and quiet surely comes across in this photo too.

Almost a "Kinkade" glow to the light and color. Beautiful image, Nick! :toast:

Fantastic light, great scene! I think thirds would be very strong here--so id crop the lhs which is no where near as exciting as the rhs anyways.

Thanks Morris & Stan!
Morris, I guess now that you mention that it does almost have that look.
Stan, Yes, I think that would work really well too. I actually did a crop like that first and almost posted it before deciding the full frame one. It was kind of a toss up for me on which one.

Here is a crop version along the lines of what Stan suggested. Now wondering which you prefer? I think I will probably print this image for the galleries so it will be one or the other of these versions. I didn't spend much time getting this one ready for the web but you can get the crop idea anyways. Thanks again for all of your thoughts on this. Nick

After looking at both---I'm not sure what to say! First, the image itself is so colorful and full of depth, textures, etc, that I almost don't care what crop you end up doing. But, of course, I think I should be a bit more 'professional' about it, so here are my thoughts.

Part of the reason I like the first, is because the left had side (I know, it's not QUITE interesting than the right) gives context and a natural reason to move ones eye deeper into the beautiful scene, and discover the vibrant colors further up the stream. The panoramic crop also encourages this, with the 'sweeping' feel that usually accompanies them.

I personally feel the second crop appears busier ('doesn't make full sense'), without the left side. Also, the river itself runs out of the frame, so taking up a lot of the lower left edges.

Anyways, those are my thoughts. I love this image! :wavey:

Thanks Paul and Nathan!
Nathan, I appreciate your feelings on the crop too. Originally I was going to post a crop version of this but then decided to go with the full frame image. I think my feelings were pretty much as you just described. The original just seems to have a little better flow to me and I like having a bit more to look at. I do like the crop version too and think both would work pretty well, but prefer the original I guess. I'm sure some will like the crop better as well so I will wait before making a decision for the print. Thanks! Nick

Nicely executed fall scene , the path of light in a static water does well with the rest of the composition, adds peace. I only wish for a bit more of a scene on the right.

Great capture Nick! Feel like I should expect to see someone to be meditating by the river. If I came across this scene, it would be hard for me to spend much time behind the camera instead of just taking it all in for a few hours. Love the light, the leading line, rocks in the foreground overall composition; would also work well as a vertical. :toast:

That is one gorgeous scene! I love the reflected colors in the river. Could go with either version, but maybe the crop because it tends to bring me into the scene just that much more.

While I like both comps, I prefer the original, Nick. I think that little extra space on the left is needed to give the scene a greater sense of depth and draw the viewer into this lovely fall image. BTW, great light and I love those fall colors picked up in the stream.

Oh man, this is the kind of sight I love to see. The light and reflection are amazing, and the level of detail in the shadows is perfect. I prefer the original post because this kind of wide shot without any obvious wide-angle distortion allows me to feel like I am standing IN the scene instead of looking at a picture on a page.

Hi Ed and Wayne, Thanks for taking the time to let me know how you feel (and that goes for everyone else here too). I really appreciate all of the input about the 2 comps as well. I like the original version myself too and will do my print from that comp. I do have another totally different shot that I think would work well too and will probably post that one soon. Thanks to all of you!!

This is probably my favorite of yours to date.
Simply an amazing find.
I could nit pick on some trivial things, but I ain't gonna.
It's a beautiful moment in time, an experience that I'm sure is memorable, and a treat for this viewer.
Well done. I hope it gets the weekly pic and more...
