As the moon sets, the glow from the rising sun reflects off crashing waves and rough surf on a windy morning, St. Mary's Lake.

I think there were about 7 or 8 photographers out there that morning, and I've seen two or three shots posted here from them ... so here's mine
This was a two exposure blend to control highlights in the sky. My gear and I got soaked shooting this! This was with the D800 around 20mm using the 14-24. I did correct the WA distortion of the moon and decided to leave it in, although I know for some it may be a distraction.

Chris,

Agree with Tom, although I must say this one is a bit harder to tell the location.

I almost always like the moon when it's included in a landscape, but this might be a case where I think it's actually a distraction. At least for me. You and others may like it.

I'm really liking the texture and capture of the water at the bottom - both in the flow at the very bottom as well as the waves. Compositionally, I'd be tempted to crop down from the top to bring more emphasis to the action of the water. As presented I kinda flip back and forth from the great sky, to the great water. But I'm getting a little picky. You've got some terrific clouds and it may be hard to part with 'em. Overall, still a great image and unique from this lake.

think this is my favorite of your recent posts from here. Love the color in the clouds and water and the strong repetition of triangular shapes (rock, cloud, distant peak) Very well composed and captured. Moon looks great in this one. Nice work

Thanks for the critiques so far. The D800 survived, though I cracked the lens hood of the 14-24 when it fell on a rock. Still works, though

Yes, I do remember this scene with the water flowing over the foreground rock. Your version is great as well. In both cases, I'm not sure that the moon is a good addition.

Beautiful work here Chris. Love the water action and those massive clouds. I'm on the fence with the inclusion of the moon, but tend to think it may be better cloned out. Love the detail and color around those fg rocks and water.

Looks like you are in white water river. The FG rock and water action is perfect and the reflected light is impressive. The FG looks a little bright to me considering the rest of the lake, but very minor. Gorgeous!

No, the moon looks good in this one as there is not distortion. Nice work. The glow in the water is great.

This is certainly a different perspective of St. Mary's that people don't normally see and I like that about your choice of comp. To me the moon is not distracting. I like the way the waves lead you up through the photograph. Wonderful capture.

Very nice work Chris! I'm undecided about the moon to be honest. The water action is great, as is the colour. I love the contrast between the colour of the water and the warm light! Great shot I would say!

I love the power of this image, an awesome display of nature! The brightness of the moon is a bit of a distraction for me, but not to bad. Nice comp, Chris. :toast:

Sweet! It looks like a river in the immediate foreground, and I love the way it converts to ocean waves and then a mountain lake as you get farther in.
